Healthier Happy Meals

I read on NPR today that McDonald's is finally giving their Happy Meals a nutritional overhaul. Until now, your options included apple slices instead of fries, but only if you ask for them. The new plan, rolling out in September, is to include fresh fruits or veggies with every meal. And, in what is probably the smartest move yet, they are cutting the portion size of the fries by more than half. The lower fat and sodium offerings result is a much healthier meal for our children.

I, for one, think this is a great move. I think it's fantastic that we, as a society, have become health-conscious enough that we are demanding better fast food options for our children. We still have a long way to go, but this is a huge step in the right direction. My guess is that many other fast food chains are going to follow suit, and hopefully, we'll be able to see future generations that are expected to outlive their parents again.

  1. This is good news, as my kids clamor for Mickey D's!

  2. You know my take. I just don't think this is really enough at all!! A step in the right direction yes but not enough to warrent all the press it is getting.

  3. I think that it might be better to work at re-formatting people's MINDS instead of happy meals... the real problem is not that kids eat Happy Meals, but that that is all they eat, they eat it on the run and parents don't bother to offer anything healthy at home. My kids get happy meals as treats, maybe once every three months. And I can definitely pick out Dominican-American children (whose parents follow american food habits) and Dominican children whose parents don't. It's a cultural thing that we blame on everything but ourselves. Soda makes you fat. French fries make you fat. School lunch makes you fat. NO! the bad food choices and bad food habits we instill in our kids make us fat.
