Intervention Time

Conversation in class on Friday:
Me: Ladies and gentlemen, let me remind you that you are NOT Madonna. Please write your first AND last name on your papers.
Student: Who is Madonna?

Can you hear my gasp through the computer?????

I honestly thought I'd NEVER see the day!

I mean, Kenny G.... Cher... okay, fine. I can see how my seventh graders maybe wouldn't know them. But MADONNA?????

An intervention was necessary. Crucial! I told this little honors student that her homework for the weekend was go to home and listen to some Madonna.

She was less than thrilled with her assignment and asked me why she has to listen to old people music.

I am pleased to report that said student came back yesterday and told me she spent the whole weekend listening to Madonna with her mom as instructed.

Me: And what did you think?
Student: I actually liked her!

Tonight's homework includes watching Madonna's music videos on YouTube so she can appreciate the great artistic expression that goes into her performances. Madge is more than just a singer, you know (I'm preaching to the choir here, I'm sure).

If this girl learns nothing else from me before my last day on Friday, she WILL learn to appreciate and respect Madge!

And THIS is why they call me Miss Lifesaver, y'all!

  1. Nikki Minaj has a new song out called "Acaconda". The kids sang it yesterday in class and were surprised when I was able to finish the lyrics. I explained that it's really a re-mix of Sir Mix Alot's "Baby Got Back" from the 90's. Their reply? You were actually alive in the 90's?

  2. I play music at the start of every period as a timer for filling in the planners. I am a Madonna music fan myself and will definitely find a song I can use for this time because there is something about "old people music"! :) :) Besides my roomies and I used to have "Vogue Tuesdays" as we were getting ready for class back in those "old days" and that brings back great memories!

  3. I definetly need to play some Madonna and offer a prize for the student who can name singer/song. I have done it with NSync which was downright hilarious. Also songs from famous football movies, Remember the Titans is a favorite of mine that no one seems to have watched. Although I will say some of my students always can id Journey or Breakfast Club so someone is teaching them right. PS this might be me venturing back to reading blogs. PS Maybe even blogging once a week.
